«…Проклят той, хто уповає на людину і покладає на тіло свою силу…» (Єр. 17, 5).
Старший син, який об’єктивно робив добрі справи і якого можна було б нагородити як «чемного хлопчика», тому що він вірно перебував удома, підтримуючи свого старого батька, — врешті, виявилось, також заблукав, як і молодший, що втік і змарнував свій спадок. Але блукання старшого сина зовсім іншого ґатунку, ніж його брата. Старший син зв’язаний почуттям образи і тому не почувається вільним щодо батька.
Образа — це, мабуть, найпоширеніше зло нашого часу. Воно дуже реальне, дуже згубне і дуже-дуже руйнівне. Ні ти від цього не вільний, ні я. Образа може поселитися у твоєму серці і наробити багато шкоди. Образа — це пастка саме для вірних, послушних, тяжко працюючих людей, які чинять добрі справи. Тому важливо про це говорити. У багатьох відношеннях ти добра людина і на своєму особистому життєвому шляху стараєшся робити добро. Можливо, посвячуєш своє життя людям. Об’єктивно є причина, щоб тебе хвалили. Але кожен міг би переглянути своє життя і стосунки з людьми та побачити, скільки болю завдала захована в серці образа.
Господи, звільни мене від моїх образ.
A Resentful Elder Brother
Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength . . . Jeremiah 17:5
The elder son who did the objectively good thing and who might have been praised for being the “good boy” because he faithfully stayed home to support his old father—ends up being as lost spiritually as the younger guy who ran off and squandered his fortune. But the elder son is lost in a very different way than his brother. The elder son is not free towards his father because he is bound by resentment.
Resentment is probably one of the most pervasive evils of our time. It’s something that is very real, very pernicious, and very, very destructive. You and I are not free from it. Resentment is something that can settle itself in your heart and do a lot of damage. Resentment is precisely the pitfall of the faithful, obedient, hardworking people who do the right thing. That’s why it’s important to talk about it. In so many ways you are a good person and you try to do the right thing in your particular life journey. Perhaps you are giving your life for others. Objectively, you have reason to be praised. But each of you might examine how your life and relationships are wounded because of resentment buried in your heart.
Set me free. Lord, from my resentments.
